Disaster Preparedness Starts with You and Me 2024 Disaster Prevention Community Fair in Wenshan District

The 1st District HQ of Taipei City Fire Department in collaboration with the Wenshan Safety Community and Healthy City Promotion Association and Wenshan District Office will hold the "Disaster Preparedness Starts with You and Me" Disaster Preparedness Community Fair on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the plaza in front of Wenshan District Office, Taipei City. Citizens are welcome to participate and learn various disaster preparedness knowledge.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 921 Earthquake, the Fire Department has specially set up a disaster preparedness experience area. Activities will include downloading disaster preparedness apps, lithium battery safety usage education, CPR and AED operation experience, and fire and earthquake response booths for the public to experience hands-on learning.

The Fire Department states that Taiwan is located at the convergent boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. Earthquakes happen frequently and they cannot be predicted accurately. The Fire Department encourages the public to prepare a Go Bag. People should customize their Go Bag for personal needs, which should include food, bottled water, first aid tools, articles for daily use, and personal special needs, such as powdered milk or diapers. Moreover, we should secure furnitures in our house to prevent them from tipping over during the earthquake. When the earthquake occurs, please follow 3 steps below to protect us from injuries:

1.     Drop: Drop on the floor.

2.     Cover: Take cover under a sturdy desk or table.

3.     Hold on: Hold on until the shaking stops.

For many years, the fire department has been continuously innovating, creating various disaster preparedness e-books to provide citizens with learning materials on disaster prevention. These include the "Disaster Preparedness Taipei" manual, as well as easy-to-read booklets such as "What to Do When an Earthquake Strikes," "What to Do When a Typhoon Strikes," "What to Do When a Fire Breaks Out (Fire Prevention Guide)," and "What to Do When a Fire Breaks Out (Evacuation and Escape Guide)." Everyone is encouraged to download these materials during this event to collectively raise awareness and create a safer community for disaster prevention among the public.
