Cardiac arrest can be reversed if treated within the first few minutes
According to statistics, if arrhythmia patients can receive treatment of electric shock within 1 minute, there is a 90% chance of survival, and every 1 minute of delay decreases the chance by 7 to 10%. This is why Japanese government has tried hard to promote the installation of AED in public places in recent years.
The famous musician “Pan-Wang” suffered from AMI during his musical performance in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall last year. Pan noted that his life couldn’t have been saved without timely rescue. An emergency expert emphasized that if electric shock is not available within 3 to 5 minutes after the emergency, the patient could fall into a vegetative state.
Every year there are about 20,000 OHCA cases in Taiwan with survival rates of 1 to 5%. If we could widely promote the installation of AED in public places and train the public how to use AED, it could save more lives.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare is now studying to modify the Emergency Medical Services Act and will request the installation of AED in places with high risks (such as hot spring areas, sports centers and care centers for the elderly), crowded places (such as airports, MRT stations and train stations).
